God, why does Dante always have to push so hard? Can’t he just do what most people do and pretend nothing is going on, that everything is fine?

I hated those words coming out of his mouth because they were the truth. I do like it when he’s blunt and says it like it is. Even if I don’t like the truth of his words. Dante doesn’t leave confusion about his motivations or what he’s thinking. He just lays it all out on the table.

He surprised me when he said I could do something outside of the home after we’re married. When I was told he’d be my husband, I pictured my days alone in some big house with little contact with the outside world. But the fact that he’s not going to restrict me to that kind of life, that I could have something of my own, build something I’m proud of… well, I’ve never allowed myself to dream about the possibilities. Maybe now I can.

It's just hard to trust someone who is supposed to be my enemy, even if he is to be my husband. There have been people in my life I should have been able to trust, and I did without reservation—until they proved I shouldn’t have.

I leave the bathroom with a feeling of optimism. Maybe I can have a life I enjoy with Dante. I’ll just have to make sure I don’t get emotionally attached. Is that possible if I find myself drawn to him physically?

I walk down the hallway toward the gym and find Sasha there, talking to one of his friends. Seeing him is like a record scratch on my brain. What about my plan? Do I toss it aside with the hope that Dante is a man of his word? Or do I continue on the course I’ve charted?

Sasha says something to his friend, then he heads my way while his friend goes back into the gym.

“Hey,” I say, nervous and looking over his shoulder in case Dante makes an appearance.

“You look beautiful tonight.”

I smile at him. It’s hard not to compare how Dante’s similar words made me feel to Sasha’s. When Dante said every man would be jealous, my heart picked up its pace. But Sasha’s words aren’t even a blip on my radar.

“Are you having fun?” I ask him.

“I’d be having more fun if I were here with you.” He steps forward and takes my hand.

I instantly step back and pull it from his grasp. “Sasha, we can’t. Dante might see,” I whisper, as if saying his name any louder will summon him.

“I don’t give a fuck. I’ve watched you with him all night, watched his arms around you, watched as he parades you around like you’re his.”

“I am his,” I say in a soft voice.

His nostrils flare, and his hands fist at his sides. “What if you weren’t? What if you were mine?”

My heart gallops in my chest. This is what I wanted, right? This is where my trail of breadcrumbs was supposed to lead him.
